April NAPM barely rises to 43.2 by Rex Nutting

 The factory sector is still slumping, but the pace of decline slowed slightly in April, a survey of manufacturers said. The National Association of Purchasing Management's April index rose to 43.2 from 43.1 in March. Economists expected the index to rise to 43.8 in April. The index is consistent with 0.2 percent growth in the economy. The production index rose to 42.9 from 42.8 while new orders jumped to 45.9 from 42.3 in March.

March construction spending a record by Rachel Koning

 Spending on domestic construction projects - both private and public - notched a record in March, according to government data released Tuesday. Total construction spending that month reached $854.4 billion dollars, a 1.3 percent increase over February. The increase more than tripled the 0.4-percent rise expected by economists polled by CBS.MarketWatch.com. In February, construction spending rose an upwardly revised 0.9 percent.
